Devin Kristofor Lulu is a watercolor artist and graphic designer in Newark, Delaware, USA.
Devin enjoys painting a variety of subjects, from landscapes and seascapes to rusty cars and birds. His artistic journey includes: pencil drawing from a very young age; excelling in and receiving a graphics award in high school; graduating with a commercial art degree; managing the design department of a community newspaper; and leading design and print operations for a local graphics/printing firm. That all led to a career as a freelance graphic designer that started in 2001, with the launch of Top End Design, LLC.
In 2016 his father-in-law invited him to a watercolor course instructed by a local artist, Geraldine McKeown. That’s when he discovered a passion for painting with watercolors.
In November 2021, Devin received the honor of being juried a Signature Artist Member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS), which was established in 1885. In the summer of 2022, he became a Board Member of BWS, serving as the Newsletter Editor. Visit their website at the link above to learn more about the organization.

Spotted these boats at the Delaware City Marina, and the name ‘Frolic’ stood out to me because I saw a few ships/boats with the same name on the coast of Maine. The mix of red, white and blue colors in this scene also caught my eye. There is something interesting but awkward about seeing sailboats out of water, and I was drawn to that.

This painting was a commission for a family member, using a reference photo they took while pheasant hunting in Kimball, South Dakota.
For me, an old building being reclaimed by its natural surroundings is a perfect subject for a painting.

I recently spent a week in Rockland, Maine for a watercolor workshop with the incredibly talented Keiko Tanabe. This was the view from outside the Coastal Maine Art Workshops studio, looking south.
I originally painted this scene en plein air on a sunny day, but re-imagined the view with a stormy sky. I felt the contrast would add drama and help the white sailboat stand out a bit.

This painting is also based on a reference photo I took while at a watercolor workshop in Rockland, Maine. It’s a combination of reference photo and imagination. I wanted to incorporate a foggy morning light shining over the two sailboats.

‘The Pearl Seafood Restaurant’ is located in Rockland, Maine. I was drawn to the contrast of the sunlit white boat against the shadow side of the gray building. Titling this painting ‘The Pearl’ seemed appropriate.
I started this painting en plain air, but the weather turned so completed it in my studio.

This is a farm in south Jersey. Was a cloudy and rainy summer day, and was on my way to ‘the shore’. I liked how the farm house and barn seem to peek over the rows of corn, with the rows in the foreground leading the viewer into the scene.

A painting of my father-in-law surf fishing at dawn in Avalon, NJ. This was a gift for him – a gesture of my thinks for him getting me into watercolor painting, and for his instruction and guidance on that journey.

This painting is based on a photo I took while sightseeing at Acadia National Park. The weather that day fluctuated between a thick, heavy mist and rain. I was drawn to the subtle pop of colors on the boats surrounded by the otherwise neutralized tones of the environment.

My wife and I meet with family at the beach in New Jersey each year, and on our way we always pass this seemingly forgotten about sailboat on the side of Rt. 40. This year I was prepared and was able to snap a reference photo as we drove by. There’s something about the awkwardness of a sailboat ‘docked’ among trees and weeds that I like.

The inspiration for this painting came from a recent trip to Lake Tahoe to visit family. Spent a little time each morning walking and sight-seeing, and on one of those mornings, walked along West Shore. ‘West Shore’ refers to the area between Tahoe City and Emerald Bay, and like much of Lake Tahoe, the views are beautiful in every direction.

This watercolor painting of a male downy woodpecker is based on a photograph I took while in Washington state. For this painting, I really tried to focus on using expressive brushwork to achieve the texture and striking patterns that make this bird so eye-catching.
