ABOUT THE ARTIST

Devin Kristofor Lulu is an award-winning watercolor artist based in Newark, Delaware. His work focuses primarily on landscapes and waterscapes, with a particular fascination for working boats and other weathered vessels that carry the marks of time and labor. With a subdued, neutralized palette and a keen sensitivity to value, Devin creates paintings that are as much about light and atmosphere as they are about subject. His approach balances warm and cool tones, sharp and softened edges, and careful transitions between light and dark to guide the viewer through each piece.

At the heart of Devin’s work is an exploration of the relationship between the natural world and human-made structures, and the quiet stories told by age and use. In 2025, one of his pieces was awarded Second Place in the Delaware Watercolor Society Juried Fine Art Exhibition. Through his paintings, Devin invites viewers into a moment of calm—a slowing of time—to see the world as he does: weathered, working, and quietly beautiful.

ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS

"Carol Ann"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

14.2×18.9” Hahnemühle Rough 140lb (300gsm)

Available for purchase.

I photographed ‘Carol Ann’ while she was docked on Cape Island in southern New Jersey in early 2024. This was partly painted with a palette knife, allowing the rough texture of the paper to help create the illusion of details.

Please contact me for information.

"Frolic & Friends"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

12.5×16.5”
Arches CP 140lb (300gsm)

2nd Place Award Winner at the Delaware Watercolor Society’s Juried Fine Art Exhibition at the Lewes Library, June 2025.

Comments from Juror, Dan Marshall, AWS:

“Frolic and Friends” by Devin Lulu has a great contrast of hard and soft edges to give us a sense of space and tell the story of diffused light in this very well rendered piece.

The dance between the variety of textures used makes for an exciting experience in this quiet scene. Salute!

Spotted these boats at the Delaware City Marina, and the name ‘Frolic’ stood out to me because I saw a few ships/boats with the same name on the coast of Maine. The mix of red, white and blue colors in this scene also caught my eye. There is something interesting but awkward about seeing sailboats out of water, and I was drawn to that.

An icon and National Historic Landmark, ‘Nellie Crockett’ is a Chesapeake Bay oyster buy-boat, built in 1925. Seen here at her home on the Sassafras River in Georgetown, Maryland, USA.

The Old Korzan Barn watercolor
"The Old Korzan Barn"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (405mmx305mm)
Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

This painting was a commission for a family member, using a reference photo they took while pheasant hunting in Kimball, South Dakota.

For me, an old building being reclaimed by its natural surroundings is a perfect subject for a painting.

"Rockland View (South)"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (405mmx305mm)
Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

I recently spent a week in Rockland, Maine for a watercolor workshop with the incredibly talented Keiko Tanabe. This was the view from outside the Coastal Maine Art Workshops studio, looking south.

I originally painted this scene en plein air on a sunny day, but re-imagined the view with a stormy sky. I felt the contrast would add drama and help the white sailboat stand out a bit.

This and many of my other original watercolors are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

Early Light watercolor
"Early Light"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (405mmx305mm)
Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

This painting is also based on a reference photo I took while at a watercolor workshop in Rockland, Maine. It’s a combination of reference photo and imagination. I wanted to incorporate a foggy morning light shining over the two sailboats.

This and many of my other original watercolors are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"The Pearl"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (405mmx305mm)
Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

‘The Pearl Seafood Restaurant’ is located in Rockland, Maine. I was drawn to the contrast of the sunlit white boat against the shadow side of the gray building. Titling this painting ‘The Pearl’ seemed appropriate.

I started this painting en plain air and completed it in my studio.

This and many of my other original watercolors are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Early Birds"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (410mmx310mm)
Saunders Waterford High White CP (NOT) 140lb (300gsm)

A painting of my father-in-law surf fishing at dawn in Avalon, NJ. This was a gift for him – a gesture of my thinks for him getting me into watercolor painting, and for his instruction and guidance on that journey.

"Reems Creek Relics"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (410mmx310mm)
Saunders Waterford CP 140lb (300gsm)

A scene from the backroads north of Asheville, NC in late November. A place with several old, historic structures that have tons of character.

This and many of my other original watercolors are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

Reems Creek Relics watercolor
Watercolor painting of a sailboat on the side of Rt 40 in New Jersey
"Sailboat on Route 40"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

11×15″ (280mmx381mm)
Baohong Rough 140lb (300gsm)

My wife and I meet with family at the beach in New Jersey each year, and on our way we always pass this seemingly forgotten about sailboat on the side of Rt. 40. This year I was prepared and was able to snap a reference photo as we drove by. There’s something about the awkwardness of a sailboat ‘docked’ among trees and weeds that I like.

This and many of my other original watercolors are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

“Cruising the Lake”

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

15×11″ (381mmx280mm)
Baohong Rough 140lb (300gsm)

A mallard paddles along the rocky shoreline. Painted from a reference photo I took near Memorial Point, Lake Tahoe.

This and many of my other original watercolors are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

watercolor painting of a duck at Lake Tahoe
Downy Woodpecker watercolor painting
"Downy Woodpecker"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

9×12″ (230mmx310mm)
Saunders Waterford White CP (NOT) 140lb (300gsm)

This watercolor painting of a male downy woodpecker is based on a photograph I took while in Washington state. For this painting, my focus was on using expressive brushwork to achieve the texture and striking patterns that make this bird so eye-catching.
