Devin Kristofor Lulu

My name is Devin Kristofor Lulu, and I am a creative professional living and working in Newark, Delaware.

My artistic journey includes: pencil drawing from a very young age; excelling in and receiving a graphics award in high school; graduating with a commercial art degree; managing the design department of a community newspaper; leading design and print operations for a local graphics/printing firm; which all led to a career as a freelance graphic designer that started in 2001, in the form of Top End Design, LLC.

It wasn’t until 2016, when my father-in-law invited me to a watercolor course instructed by a local artist, Geraldine McKeown, that I discovered a passion for painting with watercolors. Inspiration is everywhere: landscapes, nature, architecture, nautical/marine, transportation, etc.

In November 2021, I received the honor of being juried a Signature Artist Member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS), which was established in 1885. In the summer of 2022, I became a Board Member of BWS, serving as the Newsletter Editor. Visit their website at the link above to learn more about the organization.

ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS

"Rockland View (South)"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (405mmx305mm)
Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

I recently spent a week in Rockland, Maine for a watercolor workshop with the incredibly talented Keiko Tanabe. This was the view from outside the Coastal Maine Art Workshops studio, looking south.

I originally painted this scene en plein air on a sunny day, but re-imagined the view with a stormy sky. I felt the contrast would add drama and help the white sailboat stand out a bit.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

This painting is also based on a reference photo I took while at a watercolor workshop in Rockland, Maine. It’s a combination of reference photo and imagination. I wanted to incorporate a foggy morning light shining over the two sailboats.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"The Pearl"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (405mmx305mm)
Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm)

‘The Pearl Seafood Restaurant’ is located in Rockland, Maine. I was drawn to the contrast of the sunlit white boat against the shadow side of the gray building. Titling this painting ‘The Pearl’ seemed appropriate.

I started this painting en plain air, but the weather turned so completed it in my studio.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Summer in Woodstown (NJ)"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

12×8″ (305mmx203mm)
Saunders Waterford High White CP (NOT) 140lb (300gsm)

This is a farm in south Jersey. Was a cloudy and rainy summer day, and was on my way to ‘the shore’. I liked how the farm house and barn seem to peek over the rows of corn, with the  rows in the foreground leading the viewer into the scene.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Winter in Westminster (PA)"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

11.75×5.25″ (300mmx133mm)
Saunders Waterford High White CP 140lb (300gsm)

This farm caught my eye while driving back home after a weekend in Gettysburg. It had just snowed and the clouds were still clearing out.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Early Birds"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (410mmx310mm)
Saunders Waterford High White CP (NOT) 140lb (300gsm)

A painting of my father-in-law surf fishing at dawn in Avalon, NJ. This was a gift for him – a gesture of my thinks for him getting me into watercolor painting, and for his instruction and guidance on that journey.

"Reems Creek Relics"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

16×12″ (410mmx310mm)
Saunders Waterford CP 140lb (300gsm)

A scene from the backroads north of Asheville, NC in late November. A place with several old, historic structures that have tons of character.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Boats at Seal Harbor Beach"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

22×9″ (560mmx230mm)
Arches CP 140lb (300gsm)

This painting is based on a photo I took while sightseeing at Acadia National Park. The weather that day fluctuated between a thick, heavy mist and rain. I was drawn to the subtle pop of colors on the boats surrounded by the otherwise neutralized tones of the environment.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

Watercolor painting of a sailboat on the side of Rt 40 in New Jersey

"Sailboat on Route 40"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

11×15″ (280mmx381mm)
Baohong Rough 140lb (300gsm)

My wife and I meet with family at the beach in New Jersey each year, and on our way we always pass this seemingly forgotten about sailboat on the side of Rt. 40. This year I was prepared and was able to snap a reference photo as we drove by. There’s something about the awkwardness of a sailboat ‘docked’ among trees and weeds that I like.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"DUCK!"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

15×11″ (381mmx280mm)
Baohong Rough 140lb (300gsm)

A mallard paddles along the rocky shoreline. Painted from a reference photo I took near Memorial Point, Lake Tahoe.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Walk Along West Shore"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

12×16″ (310mmx410mm)
Saunders Waterford High White CP (NOT) 140lb (300gsm)

The inspiration for this painting came from a recent trip to Lake Tahoe to visit family. Spent a little time each morning walking and sight-seeing, and on one of those mornings, walked along West Shore. ‘West Shore’ refers to the area between Tahoe City and Emerald Bay, and like much of Lake Tahoe, the views are beautiful in every direction.

This and many of my other original watercolors (see below) are available for purchase. Please contact me for information and prices.

"Downy Woodpecker"

Watercolor by Devin K. Lulu

9×12″ (230mmx310mm)
Saunders Waterford White CP (NOT) 140lb (300gsm)

This watercolor painting of a male downy woodpecker is based on a photograph I took while in Washington state. For this painting, I really tried to focus on using expressive brushwork to achieve the texture and striking patterns that make this bird so eye-catching.
